What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is fermented pulverized apples.  Vinegar is a product of fermentation. This is a process in which sugars in a food are broken down by bacteria and yeast. In the first stage of fermentation, the sugars are turned into alcohol. Then, as the alcohol ferments further, it becomes vinegar.

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Work for Weight Loss?

Many people believe that apple cider vinegar can help them lose weight.  This belief has been around since the 1950s, when D.C. Jarvis indicated in his book, Folk Medicine that drinking apple cider vinegar can promote weight loss.  However, it does not appear that the apple cider vinegar itself is causing weight loss.  Proponents of the apple cider vinegar for weight loss program indicate that the apple cider vinegar should be ingested just prior to eating a meal.  Because of the sour taste of the vinegar, the desire for food is reduced.  Eating less while usually lead to weight loss, which is probably why people who drink apple cider vinegar lose weight.

What Do the Experts Say About Apple Cider Vinegar and Weight Loss?

Dr. Andrew Weil stated on his site that there is no scientific evidence that using apple cider vinegar for weight loss will work.  Dr. Weil explained that early on in the apple cider vinegar weight loss diet fad, people believed that apple cider vinegar weight loss recipes of apple cider, kelp, vitamin B-6, and lecithin would trick the body’s metabolism into burning fat faster than normal.  Now, taking increasing doses of apple cider vinegar to reduce hunger and food cravings is what is taught in relation to apple cider vinegar and weight loss.  However drinking apple cider vinegar does not curb your appetite as stated.  But, because apple cider vinegar is very acidic, it can slow gastric emptying, which will negate the effect that eating a high-carb meal has on blood sugar.

Bottom line: Apple cider vinegar is not likely to be an effective route to weight loss as its proponents claim.
